چکیده

Polymethylmethacrylate-based (PMMA) bone cements containing functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were prepared, and the thermal properties of the resultant nanocomposite cements were characterized in accordance with the international standard for acrylic resin cements. The aim of this study was to determine the peak temperatures during the polymerization reaction in PMMA bone cement by thermocouple (temperature sensor). The CNTs were uniformly dispersed in the cement matrix. The setting time of the cement increased and the maximum temperature during exothermic polymerization reaction was effectively reduced by the incorporation of functionalized CNTs. This reduction decreased thermal necrosis of the respective nanocomposite cements, which probably could reduce the hyperthermia experienced in vivo. Copyright © 2013 IFSA.

Optimal SQUID based non-destructive test for detecting sub-surface defects with the help of advanced SQUID superconducting sensors and an experimental approach for optimal production method of these sensors from the YBCO superconductor materials

The conventional eddy current method for non-destructive inspection of welding joints has limitations that can examine defects to a certain depth below the surface of the sample and is not suitable for determining deep defects. This limitation can be overcome using the SQUID superconducting sensors. The nonstoichiometric composition of YBCO due to its superconducting temperature and desired cri...

Experimental Characterizations of Bone Cement Curing Setting Temperature and Time

In thermal characterization tests of bone cement according to the ASTM Standard Specification for Acrylic Bone Cement, time-temperature profiles of bone cement were observed to be sensitive to the thickness of the cement patty and the mold material. Due to the heat transfer from cement to the surrounding mold, such tests might underestimate the exothermic temperature of bone cement. Developing ...

Conduction analysis of cement interface temperature in total knee arthroplasty.

We applied an axisymmetric model of the tibia to a finite element method and analyzed the heat conduction from bone cement in total knee arthroplasty using numerical simulation with the finite element analysis software, ABACUS. We hypothesized the thermal necrotic map of bone. Moreover, we suggested a method for preventing thermal necrosis of bone using this simulation. We adopted an initial te...

Effect of additive particles on mechanical, thermal, and cell functioning properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) cement

The most common bone cement material used clinically today for orthopedic surgery is poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Conventional PMMA bone cement has several mechanical, thermal, and biological disadvantages. To overcome these problems, researchers have investigated combinations of PMMA bone cement and several bioactive particles (micrometers to nanometers in size), such as magnesium oxide, ...
